Explore the scope

What does it cover?

UN R86 regulates installation of lighting and light-signalling devices on T-, R- and S-category vehicles. The number, position, geometric visibility and operation of the devices are assessed on the vehicle. Approval of an individual lamp does not establish compliance of the complete installation.

Who is it for?

For vehicle and lighting equipment manufacturers and visibility, optical testing and approval teams.

Which subjects are addressed?

  • Scope for T, R and S categories
  • Number, position and visibility of lamps
  • Operation on the vehicle

Common question

Is using an approved lamp sufficient for R86?

Not by itself. R86 addresses installation and operating conditions on the vehicle. Device approval and installation assessment are separate matters.
