Explore the scope

What does it cover?

The UN R185 working text addresses Automated Driving Systems in M, N, L6 and L7 vehicles. ADS combines hardware and software to perform the entire dynamic driving task on a sustained basis, including perception, planning, decisions and control. A separate scope boundary applies to ALKS functions approved under R157.

Who is it for?

For vehicle manufacturers, suppliers developing the relevant systems and test or approval teams.

Which subjects are addressed?

  • ADS and the dynamic driving task
  • M/N/L6/L7 vehicle scope
  • Scope distinction from ALKS

Common question

Does a driving assistance function automatically qualify as ADS?

No. The ADS definition requires sustained performance of the entire dynamic driving task. The presence of one assistance function does not establish that scope.
