When using an approved component, check the conditions for the vehicle too.
Understanding what an approval covers is a useful first step in assessing how equipment may be used on a vehicle. Some regulations address the component, its installation and the complete vehicle in separate sections. Keep these distinctions visible in your technical file.
Two different scopes in an LPG system
UN R67 addresses approval of specified LPG equipment and installation on a vehicle in different sections. Alongside the equipment certificate, identify the provisions that govern its use on the vehicle.
Vehicle structure also matters for protection devices
UN R73 deals separately with a lateral protection device and its installation. It also describes cases where parts of the vehicle perform all or part of the protective function. The assessment therefore goes beyond the name of a separately sold part.
Check vehicle provisions when fitting a separate technical unit
EU 2022/545 addresses approval of an event data recorder as a separate technical unit and also sets out provisions for a vehicle fitted with such a unit. The link between unit approval and vehicle assessment must be established from the relevant provisions.
Three questions for your working file
- What exactly has been approved: a component, system, separate technical unit or vehicle?
- Are there separate provisions for installation or use on the vehicle?
- Does the vehicle and version I am working with fall within the text’s scope?
These questions help structure your file; they do not, by themselves, determine whether a particular product complies.
